CAT | Some facts about Underwater Hockey

Underwater hockey or “OCTOPUSH”, as it is commonly called, is a game that involves no contact, and in which the two teams play against one another trying to move a disc towards the other end the swimming pool to score goals. The players of each team have to wear equipment such as diving masks, swim fins and snorkels. They should also use some safety gear to protect their ears, along with a water polo cap and also gloves, which are for their hands’ protection. Also, they also protect the players from pool abrasion. Players are permitted to switch the playing stick between their hands in between the play. The playing sticks are not much long in size, measuring only up to 350 mm in length. Its color could be black or white, and is usually used for denoting a team.

The disc size is almost comparable to that of an ice hockey one. Made mostly from lead, it weighs somewhere around three pounds for adult players and only 1-3/4 pounds for junior players. It always has a plastic covering around it, which offers not only protection but also facilitates a strong grip on it. It also decreases the friction rate. The goals are around three meters in length, and are located on both the sides at the bottom of the pool.
